Twelfth Sustainability Report as per GRI Guidelines. The Datwyler Group, for the third consecutive time, succeeded in reducing the consumption of electricity, fuels, and water per revenue unit. The amount of waste per revenue unit, too, continued dropping. By putting into operation a modern cogeneration unit at the Italian facility, Datwyler reduces CO2 emissions by an additional 900 tonnes per year. In the long term, Datwyler has now set itself the target of carbon neutrality. The Swiss plant is producing CO2-neutrally already thanks to hydropower and a wood-fired heating plant.
Being a responsible company, Datwyler wants to do its bit for attaining the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Hence the company has public reduction objectives for the consumption of resources as well as the amount of waster per revenue unit.

For the third consecutive time, reduction in relative resource consumption
Thanks to measures that were implemented, in 2019 Datwyler, for the third consecutive time, succeeded in reducing the resource consumption per revenue unit: electricity -3.2%, fuels -0.5%, water -15.0%, and waste volume -5.5%. In doing so, Datwyler achieved the public objectives of a relative reduction of 3% for energy and water consumption as well as waste volume. For water, even the total consumption dropped by 8.9%. Contributing factors included a new closed cooling circuit for the mobility production facility in the Swiss plant as well as putting into operation two of a total of three projected processing units for multiple water usage in the Belgian plant.
Reduction of the relative CO2 emissions
Datwyler reduced the CO2 emissions per revenue unit by 5.5% in 2019. An interdisciplinary project group is currently working on further advancing the sustainability and climate strategy with the long-term goal of carbon neutrality. In Switzerland, Datwyler produces CO2-neutrally already by using a wood-fired heating plant for process energy and heating power as well as hydropower for electricity. As a result, every year the company saves 500’000 tonnes of fuel oil and 3’600 tonnes of CO2. By putting into operation a modern cogeneration unit at the Italian facility, Datwyler reduces the CO2 emissions by some additional 900 tonnes per year.
Proactive chemial compliance management
Datwyler appreciates its responsibility towards its stakeholder group, society, and the environment. Among other things, this can be seen from a proactive chemical compliance management, in which Datwyler goes well beyond legal requirements, setting world-leading standards in the elastomer industry in the process. In doing so, the company increases the job safety of its employees and reduces environmental pollution during production, usage, and at a later disposal of the products. Moreover, global customers benefit from particularly safe elastomer compounds for their products from all Datwyler plants. In the long run there is therefore less need for laborious reformulations of elastomer compounds. Datwyler has been a member of UN Global Compact since 2009 already, and publishes the twelfth sustainability report as per the Global Re-porting Initiative’s (GRI) guidelines this year.
